Battlegroup Rules

Quite a lot has been happening in the real world lately, all good I may add. As a consequence my time to prepare material for the blog has reduced considerably. I am however, getting the opportunity to game regularly (never a bad thing) and am trying out lots of new rules systems.

The latest game played was a 15mm WWII game using the Battlegroup rules. I took command of the American forces and my opponent was German; we were very fortunate to have an umpire which kept the game flowing as we were both new to the system.

A disclaimer here: I'm not really a WWII gamer, and as a result my lack of tactical nouse and knowledge of the period was brutally exposed in the early rounds. However, I do have to say in my defence I managed to adapt to the challenges faced, although a little too late to be able to secure the objective; the game eventually ended up quite a close run thing, with a Germans victory.

I thoroughly enjoyed the game, and once I managed to grasp the nuances of placing units on reserve move, ambush etc, and coordinate my armour, artillery and infantry I actually started to see positive outcomes on the battlefield. Quite in contrast to the earlier rounds where I was taught a harsh lesson by a Tiger tank. I didn't quite managed to knock out the Tiger, though due to the fortuitous drawing of a breakdown token it was immobilised for the later stages of the game, and if it wasn't for some terrible dice throwing I might even have tamed the beast!

Due to my lack of WWII experience I don't feel able to comment on the historical accuracy of the game, however, from a WWII novice looking on from a purely gaming perspective I found the system fun and easy to grasp, and with my limited knowledge of the period rewarded historical play. Looking forward to more games of Battlegroup, and might even be tempted to get some Russians at some point in the future.

US Vehicles

Further progress with my WWII American forces for Bolt Action. Some vehicles, all 28mm Warlord Games miniatures. I have also completed the first batch of Infantry and support weapons these will be  posted as soon as I can get a chance to take photos.

On the gaming front the fledgling club has just met for the second time, SAGA was the game of choice, I fielded Scots and running true to form I lost spectacularly...

Starting the club has changed the focus in my painting schedule with my WSS taking a slight back seat as I concentrate on smaller club sized games. Figures are being painted up for SAGA and Muskets and Tomahawks. My Anglo-Zulu project will be receiving some additions, the first batch will be some NNC and Irregular cavalry to enable me to play The Men Who Would Be Kings. Then there will be further additions in the shape of Zulu huts, more cavalry including dismounted versions, and a small Naval detachment. Other plans are to work on Swordpoint armies, some will require a few extra figures and a little rebasing (my pet hate!); others will be new armies. Also on the assembly line is the much awaited Toy Story force for Dragon Rampant with the final figures just arriving; though I did purchase some extras for the Minions as a result but games will not be dependant upon their arrival. I won't be neglecting my WSS for too long, in all likelihood I'll have a unit or two on the painting table to work on as the mood takes me. I'm itching to paint my French Musketeers!

Sherman FURY - WWII US forces begin

I've been slightly sidetracked into painting some WWII American forces for Bolt Action after my youngest showed a keen interest in a Sherman tank model that I'd just finished (pictures below). The model is 1/56 scale from Die Waffenkammer. I've painted up some of the support options and have started assembling Warlord Games plastic infantry. The only thing that's bugging me at the moment is the whereabouts of a box of metal figures that I've misplaced; I suspect they'll turn up when all the infantry have been painted!

Panzer IV AUSF H Mit Schurzen

Panzer IV AUSF H Mit Schurtzen from Warlord Games to add to my German forces.

Thoughts this week are turning to SALUTE on Saturday, I am looking forward to seeing the display games and taking lots of photos which can be seen on the blog in batches, the first of which I hope to get posted Saturday night on my return.

Hetzer Tank Hunter - Jagdpanzer 38(t)

Another model from Warlord Games, this time a Hetzer Tank Hunter, or officially the Jagdpanzer 38(t) armed with a 75mm gun. I love the low profile on this vehicle and had to add one to my German forces, just hope it's not too effective when I'm playing as the allied forces...

Puma Sd.Kfz 234/2 Armoured Car

It's been a while since I posted anything World War II on the blog, so I thought I'd show the Puma armoured car that I painted a few years ago now to reinforce my Bolt Action Germans. The model is a Warlord Games resin one, no longer available I believe as they now sell a plastic kit.

This was my first attempt at painting any World War II vehicle, and I'm fairly pleased with the outcome, though I think I was a little heavy handed with the weathering powders. I don't have an air gun, and I did think long and hard about buying one. However after seeing pictures of German troops applying paint to their vehicles by all manner of methods, from spraying to brushing (including one that looked like they were using a yard brush), I decided to just paint them with my little brushes.

World War II Germans

Some pictures of my WWII Germans, a mix of 28mm Warlord Games, Artizan Designs that I painted myself and some Battle Honours miniatures that I picked up off eBay. The models are also a mix of metal and plastic. Explosion markers were bought of eBay from Small Terrain Miniature Scenery.

Primarily the army was built to play Bolt Action, I also have copy of Chain of Command by Too Fat Lardies that I intend trying out at some point.

The section of wall was made from cut up plastic sprues, the bits usually thrown away.
